Ben Ehrenreich and Carribean Fragoza: A Thought Provoking Conversation
OCTOBER 20, 2025
In real life and in the literary landscape, climate change is one hot topic. This Open Book conversation drew readers and climate activists from all over Los Angeles to savor Ben Ehrenreich’s thoughts drawn from his noteworthy 2021 book, Desert Notebooks.
In this book, subtitled A Road Map for the End of Time, Ehrenreich grapples with the very essence of human existence, the effects of time, past and present, that measure mankind’s journey on this earth, and the looming questions of our future on an injured planet. Among the accolades for Desert Notebooks were “New York Times Notable Book of 2020,” “Editors' Choice, The New York Times Book Review,” and an Amazon Best Book of the Month in Nonfiction.
Playing companion on this sojourn of time and place was author Carribean Fragoza, whose debut collection of stories, Eat the Mouth that Feeds You, gives voice to Latinos experiencing the wonder, violence and dark realities of Southern California. The collection won the 2021 "Whiting Award" and was a finalist for the "PEN America Literary Award" 2021.
Our hosted happy hour preceded the conversation. Our location honored the recently fire-devastated Altadena community (thank you, Altadena Public Library!), with mingling continuing afterwards through a book-signing, farewells, and promises to reconvene in January 2026 for a new season of OPEN BOOK!
